Ralph Wilson, editor of Web Marketing Today has a great article comparing e-newsletters to blogs. In it, he lists the benefits of each, leaving it up to you to decide just which avenue to take.
My personal opinion is to use both in your marketing. Regardless of what type of sales your in, the name of the game is exposure. You want to give people as much exposure to you and your product as possible. The best format for newsletters, I believe is a weekly or bi-weekly. If it’s a newsletter you’re charging money for, then monthly would be the right format.
Blogs, on the other hand should be posted as often as possible. The writing is often more casual than in newsletter articles, so it should be a whole lot easier to write something at least 3 times a week. The more you post, the more readers you get.
Using both blog and e-newsletter allows you to build one off the other. For example, If you post a weekly newsletter with an article you’ve written, you can then take that article, cut and paste in onto an article site like ezinearticles.com. You can then post a link to your blog at the end of our article.
The same goes for your blog. You can send links to your other web site so people can sign up for your e-newsletter. If your blog content is good, people will probably want to sign up for your newsletter as well.
While, we’re on the subject of content, why not add your own podcast in the mix? I have my own podcast show along with marketing expert David Dutton. Google loves podcasts because, like blogs, the content is constantly being updated.
